Smoking: The Advertising of Yesterday

I just love running across these old smoking ads. I used another one in a post I wrote about Mad Men.
I am fascinated by the ads from the 50's and 60's, especially the ones that were targeted to, or used the status of women to get their message across. They were so insulting by today's standards.
But wait, it gets better. What till you feast your eyes on this. Here is an actual article that I believe appeared in the Housekeeping Monthly publication, circa 1955. You may have to click on the image to enlarge it.

My how far we have come. Now be nice you guys!

I feel like burning my bra right now...
Funny, I do have dinner waiting when my husband gets home. I try to pick up the house, but I know my place...It's as the head of the household!

they need to run that article in todays paper
Yes. We have come far. The average woman can't even cook a decent meal nowadays. In fact, half of the stuff in that ad present day women would scoff at.
Well leon, the reality is that most women had a much harder day than the husband did.
Work is usually calm and orderly. Home and children are typically chaos AND many women are expected to do all that AND work!
If you want to understand the reality of the impact of such an article - read it thru again and REPLACE every female reference with a male reference and vice-a-versa.
The minute it is the MALE'S 'job to know HIS place,' the inequity becomes clear to all.
Should we treat guys like that? How about women, now that we've thought about that for a minute?

p.s. has the average man EVER been able to cook a decent meal?????
hi dropping by via entrecard! i really couldn't help but react to that, leon. i think you haven't been to the philippines (about women who can't cook). :) and yeah, if that ran in today's papers, there'd be lynching... of newspaper editors. hehehe.

Wow ... I'm more in shock by the first ad about smoking than the one about being a good wife and mother.
There's nothing wrong with being a good wife and mother after all. But a doctor telling you which brand of cigarette to smoke ... we have actors telling us that :D
We've come a long way baby. It would really suck to be seen as a second class citizen, just because you have ovaries and boobs instead of balls and a penis.
Let me just say that I cook extremely well and I take care of the house and all that; but I also have a better education than my husband does.
I'll tell you...that little article actually just made me sort of sad. My poor mother.
I don't know about the "average" man but BigPop's can cook. From your ordinary grilling to a masterpiece for 10. AND I can even pick out a wine. :)
I have better education than my husband and I can cook. My place in the household - joint head.
sad thing is, there are some people who still agree with that article
This took my breath away! It's good to read this to remind ourselves how far we've come - both men and women.
I think that article would be awesome (well some of it) if it ran next to an equally strict list of guidelines for men.
*Listen to what she says. She may well be the smartest person you talk to today.
