What Did You Just Say?

I got a call today from a magazine trying to sell me a "no obligation, cancel at any time" subscription. According to the sales rep, the magazine focused on specialized SEO, SEM and web marketing.

I said, "Sure, I will take a look at it, but I want to take a look at your website first."

She said, "Oh, uhhh... well, we don't have a website."

My Response - "So let me get this straight, you have a publication about website marketing, search engine marketing and SEO and you DON'T have a website?"

((click)) The line goes dead.

Yes that's right, I got a circa 1988 telemarketing call peddling a subscription to a magazine and they hung up on me when I questioned them. Nice. I wonder what kind of scam they were running?

This reminds me of a of the girl who tried to scam money out of me in front of Target right before Christmas. A young and inexperienced panhandler came up to me and said that she was collecting money for a mission trip for her church.

Me - "Oh really, what church?"
Her - "The baptist one."
Me - "Which one."
Again she said, "The baptist one."
Me - "Yeah, I heard you, but which one"
Her - "The Kingdom Hall over on um...uhhh..."
Me - "The Kingdom Hall is a Jehovah Witness church"
Her - "Uhhh...well...uhhh...I wish my sister was here she knows more than I do."
Me - "No thank you, I have to go now"

As she walked away I got in my truck and watched her try and hit up someone else coming out of the store.

The moral of the story. If you are going to try and scam someone, at least have your story straight or make sure you have a website. :)

I can already hear it, some of you are going to say, "But Big Pops, your website has been down/under construction a LOOONG time." To you I say, HA. No longer will The Big Bald Blog be alone on Impactmt.com.

It is a glorious day here in Big Pappa Land. We are in the final stages of getting it ready to go live, FINALLY. I think that it should be live here in the next week or so. So again I say, HA.

Have you ever been scammed or has anyone attempted to scam you? Let's hear the story.

Have a great weekend everyone!

I think I am just not nice, but my husband has "Sucker" written across his forhead. One time this woman asked for $17 for a train ride, my husband, not having any cash, lets this woman in the van with us and our children, drives to an ATM and gives her $100, so she can stay and fight for her medical benefits or some such hooey, then gives her our information so she can pay us back! So she calls him within a week! But I intercepted the call, and do you think she would tell me what she needed to tell him? Nope. So there was no way I was giving her access to him again!

He also was going to pay $80 for lightbulbs because they were made by the blind and they said "God bless you." on the phone. Umm, NO. We had 5 kids then, and $80 for lightbulbs was NOT happening no matter WHO made them.
(does anyone else think it is funny that the blind were making lightbulbs??)

You have got to laugh at some of these people. I really did like the one about the SEO magazine, really made me laugh!

They might even start up their own website now, just because of you :-)

Too funny!

Big Papa, that's like you and me trying to sell a new comb. I can see it now...

Big Papa and Sly Bald Guy: Excuse me sir, we're selling this amazing new comb that allows you to style your hair in just seconds.

Man: How do you know? You don't have any hair.

BP and SBG: Um, trust us it works.

Man: No thanks!

My gullible sister Micaela (I love her anyways!) almost got 'taken' by some magazine solicitor...click on my name to read the story :)

But a SEO mag with no website...that's like a voice actor with no demo recording.

I worked in a grocery store in HS and we used to get "short changers" in. They would buy something like a pack of gum for 49 cents and pay with a $100 bill. When you gave them change, they would hand you like $60 back and say, "here's $80, would you mind giving me some tens and fives"...etc...you can see how it goes.
I got pretty good at recognizing this and I would give them their 10 and 5 dollar bills, but only $40 worth and then slam my drawer shut and then I'd play the dumb teenager role.
"Dude, I gave you your money dude" is what I'd say.
They'd begin to protest and I'd say in a stoner voice, "sure, lemme call my manager and that off duty cop security guard over there to count down my drawer then." NEVER one time did they have me do that ... they'd leave and I'd smirk.
(this happend like twice...but I like to sound like it happened a lot LOL)

Now that's a hoot -- scamming someone about a subject on which she doesn't have something to back it up. Priceless!

I was scammed a few years ago myself. I was walking out of the grocery story when a woman says she needed gas to get home. I gave her some money. As I was leaving the parking lot I noticed I couldn't find her and it definitely wasn't enough time for her to leave completely. I finally saw her...as she was driving off from a completely different direction from where she said her car was. Geesh! The nerve of some people.

Loved that! We got a call from an SEO firm guaranteed to get us on page one in a matter of nine months. I questioned them as well about SEO and there site, "oh, we don't want to come up for those keywords"

WHAT? I asked, well the competition is so fierce, we are not interested in ranking high for SEO. I asked for references, and all the sites they did had so much spam to them.. it was funny to hear them talk themselves out of that.

Conference call went dead!

WOW, thanks for that amazing bit zero substance Anonymous. I don't see what Jehovah's Witnesses have to do with this post. I contemplated not allowing this comment because it appears to be spam. However I haven't had to do that yet. So there you go. You got some press for your sites.
