Tropic Thunder Being Protested In Iowa

The Hawkeye Down Syndrome Association protested the showing of Tropic Thunder at the Wehrenberg Theater in Cedar Rapids. The protest was waged "for the movie's use of the 'r' word, retard, in the movie. Protestors (sic) called for a boycott of the movie, saying the word's use in the movie is very offensive to people with mental disabilities." Via KWWL

As it turns out, people all over are protesting the movie. I can think of a lot more offensive things to protest movies for. I guess everyone has their cause. I can't remember people protesting a movie this much since The Last Temptation of Christ.

The picketers must not have seen Something About Mary.

Ya wonder if that is just going to make more people go see the movie!! I will be going to see it, but I was going to see it even prior to the protestors.

Hi,

Thank you for commenting on my Web site. I told you that I'd be responding to yours.

Censorship is wrong in my opinion. A free nation should not be in the business of monitoring what information people consume.

Of course, special interest groups should have the right to express their opinion. The problem is when the opinion of a small active group of people get enough attention to limit information offered to the silent majority.

It's easy to make fun of people with disabilities. It makes us all feel better about ourselves when we do. Using the word "retard" is funny, because you know that most of them don't even understand that we are laughing at them.

Oh my God! I was just about to compliment you on your snarky name for the group protesting the movie.

I thought you'd come up with a weird amalgam of the sensitive character Hawkeye Pierce on M*A*S*H, the war pic Black Hawk Down, and Down Syndrome.Maybe it doesn't make sense, but it sounded hilarious to me.

Then I read the piece and saw this is the real name of the group. Somehow, that' even funnier.

I think people who post comments anonymously are the real retards.

@kathcom - I thought about playing off the "real" name of the group but I was trying to be nice. :) Thanks for stopping by.

So pappa,
I guess I am not so bright, maybe even retarded. Please help me out.
Are you saying it's OK to use the word "retard" in a movie?
I'm not very bright and could not make out if you were being sarcastic or serious when degrading those who were protesting.
Please, black and white. Is it OK to make fun of the mentally retarded?

@the most recent anonymous - Can you point on somewhere in the post that I was making fun of anyone and where was I degrading someone?

To answer your question -Yes, I guess it IS ok to say retard in a movie. At least that is what the Constitution of the United States says. If that offends you, don't go see the movie. Barbara Streisand offends ME and therefore I don't go see any of her movies. There are all kinds of offensive movies out there. If porn offends you don't watch it. Porn offends me so I don't watch it.

Just for the "black and white" and so you are no longer confused, My sister is severely metally handicapped and I spent a great deal of my youth taking care of her. So don't you judge me!

The ability for people to say and do things they want is what makes this country great. Freedom of speech and expression. This even allow people to protest and bloggers to write about it. Thank your lucky stars that this is not China.

Thanks again for stopping by Anonymous, it was good to see you again.
