So ridiculous; no wonder so many children are messed up!! So I guess our educational system went down hill a lot sooner than I had originally thought. I just looked up the staff names at my daughter's school to make sure she doesn't encounter this bozo. YIKES!!!!

That's when you pull your kid from the school and send him/her to a private school.

This is ridiculous... Guess who wouldn't of had to wait till the first parent/teacher meeting to meet me.

Come on, if you can't accept that you made a mistake and, OK, may have looked a bit "stupid" and the class had a bit of fun at your expense, you shouldn't have the right to teach!!!

Jesus Christ..is the teacher kidding us?

OMG. I'm really shocked of his explanation, I thought we're sending our kids are going to school for 'right' education?

What happened on this one?

My kid would be out of that school as soon as possible.

I sure the teacher also thinks that the earth is flat.

The kid was totally justified. Discipline the teacher.

...and that letter is dated 14 years ago. Yawn. Howabout getting riled up over something that's happening NOW.

Thanks for stopping by anonymous. I always value your frequent visits. The generation from the 1994 era are the ones that I am referring to. However I guess you can't call them kids anymore can you.

I would say that things have gotten worse since 1994. "Now" Teen pregnancy is higher. Illiteracy, values, respect for authority, teen drug use and much more have gotten worse wouldn't you say?

You may say it, but no, I wouldn't, because it's not actually true. Teen pregnancy, for instance, has decreased significantly since 1994.

Ditto teen drug use:

I guess I found some different stats. On SOME drugs, the use is higher now. For some odd reason 1984 was high for cocaine use among high school kids.

It seems fake to me. Snopes.com does not have evidence for the letters authenticity or lack thereof.

http://www.snopes.com/humor/letters/hilliker.asp

But the letter seems "too stupid to be true" to me. I am a teacher and when a student corrects me in class or corrects a textbook which has an error I praise the student for making the correction.

If the student disrupts the class using a teacher's error as an excuse to be rude and disrespectful the student might receive some consequences.

Teachers should model appropriate behavior which includes being willing to admit a mistake. Students should learn how to respectfully disagree with an authority and learn to back up their assertions with evidence.

My father, a teacher before he passed away a year back, said that modern education is less about actually teaching kids and more about just getting them to follow the rules and depend on the government to guide them in life. It's more a form of institutionalization than education.
