" What I Found In My Email" Mondays. Vol.1 - Issue 11

Ok fine. So I am going to post one more time in 2007. Here is the last edition of "what I found in my email" Mondays for 2007.

Those of you living in areas where it snows quite a bit, you can understand having a snow blower with "a little bit more power." But as you will soon see, more power has a new meaning.

I got this from a guy who does a LOT of snow blowing and can appreciate this level of commitment. With a unit like this, I just might be able to join Al's "Brotherhood of the Snowblower."

The email said that this is a 454, V8 snow blower. I think that Tim Allen would be proud of this accomplishment.

454 V8 snowblower

454 v8 snowblower

v8 454 snowblower

I guess this is just one of those things that he had to see if he could do it. Not practical at all but that's obviously not the point. At least it gives us snow bound individuals something to drool over.

Have a safe and happy New Years Eve!

See you in 2008!

Another Sometimes on Saturday Post

I know that isn't a headline that is click worthy but hey, it's Saturday. I have to tell everyone, I am extremely fortunate. My readers are the best and the comments they leave are both interesting and valuable. I don't think that some/most of the "A-List" bloggers can say that.

I do read most of the "A-List" blogs like Chow, Cow, Shoe, Rowse, and a few others, but I have to tell ya, I am starting to loose interest. Primarily because of the comments that are typically left. Understand that I like the posts, but seriously, have you taken a look at some of the comments. The "Nice post" and "Good job" type posts are really starting to get to me.

I was on Chow yesterday and was reading a post and there were 46 comments, 40 of which were complete rubbish and of no value. I actually left what I thought was a "contributing" comment and there were 3 people that responded to my comment in a manner that could also be seen as a contribution. Frankly I am getting more out of reading the "B-list" (if there is such a thing). Don't get me wrong I am not trying to put people in classes or rate the blogs I read. I am simply using other people's words that describe traffic I guess. OR maybe if you are a member of the "A" crowd it must mean that you are making a lot of money from your blog. By that definition I am definitely a "D-Lister."

Oh well. What's a fella to do. I guess the whole point of this post is that I am grateful that I don't have a bunch of link hungry trolls, leaving spammy comments.

And so, after reading this, there are a few of you that I would fully expect to respond in the manner described above. So go ahead and get it out of your system.

This may very well be the last post of 2007 so here's a reminder. Make sure you get entered in the contest. The deadline is the 4th at 4:00 PM CST. Have a Happy New Year Everyone!

Late News For The Week. It's Official - Digg Is For Sale

I know that this is pretty old news but I just read that Digg is for sale for $300 million dollars.

"A reliable source just confirmed the company’s plans, noting the company has hired Allen & Company, a tiny but influential private investment firm, to help broker a deal. The asking price is still $300 million, the source said." Wow, $300 million. I wonder if they'll take a check?

"When asked about a potential sale, Digg founder Kevin Rose said that “we never comment on things related to acquisitions.”

Awww shucks, can't he give us a little something?

All I know is that I have way better luck with traffic from Stumbleupon. Digg has never really generated anything substantial. With any social media, the big challenge is converting that traffic into RSS subscribers or ad clickers, what ever your goal is. I have had moderate luck getting RSS conversions from SU traffic. However this month I have increased my RSS subs by about 70 so far but that was due primarily to the contest which ends on the 4th. And because it is going so well I am going to give an un-announced bonus when the winner is drawn.

I am curious, what social media is your biggest generator of traffic?

Customer Service IS Marketing

Back in September I wrote a post on the level of customer service that I had to endure during an encounter with our fine U.S. Postal Service. Customer service is something that I am always looking for, good or bad. I want to make sure that the good is rewarded and I take lessons from the bad.

What is good customer service though? Is it outsourcing your technical help line to an Indian company where they can barely speak English? Does great customer service mandate that you have a very long and complicated auto attendant on your phone system? I think not.

I can't tell you how many times I have been on hold for over a half hour with my home ISP and the on hold message is saying, and I'm not kidding here - "If you are experiencing problems with your internet please go to www..." By the time you actually get to speak to a live person, you are much more irritated than when you first dialed the support line number. To make matters worse, the poor, unfortunate soul that gets the daunting privilege of assisting you, ends up with both barrels.

In my continuing quest to educate myself and try as I might to improve my own customer service skills, I ran across a BRILLIANT article on the very subject over at the aptly named Daily Brilliance.

Allow me to hit the high points for you.
  • Tell your customers when there is a problem: Don't wait for them to call you and wonder what is going on. It's all about being proactive.
  • Don't have automated phone systems if you can help it.
  • Don't lie to your customers. This goes back to sales 101. Tell them the truth, if you don't know, say; "I don't know but I will find out for you." This will eliminate the "over promise and under deliver" problem that commonly plagues sales people.
  • If you are going to sell something new, make sure your employees know about it and are at least slightly trained on the subject. I can't tell you how many times I have gone into a store and I know more about the item in question than the sales person. If you don't know about the product go find someone who does. NEVER FORGET, consumers are WAY MORE educated these days by the time they walk into your store. People do use the internet for something other than email and funny videos.
  • This is MY FAVORITE! "Do Not Allow People That Do Not Speak English Out With The Customers." If you are going to sell me something, especially here in the Midwest, make sure you can sell it to me in English. I don't care if it is a Whopper with cheese or a 52 inch plasma, you need to be able to speak the official language of my country in order to sell it to me.
  • Make sure you wait on customers. If I walk into a store and I have waited 15 minutes for help while the employees are all huddled together discussing the rave that they attended last night, I am walking out. Greet your customer, thank them for the business and say good bye as they leave.
  • If you outsource, does your customer service suffer? You had better make sure it doesn't. The author states that he encourages people to purchase PC from somewhere other than Dell "...due to the quality of customer support I’ve received through their call center in India. I have nothing against Indian people but I do have a problem dealing with customer support when I cannot understand them."
  • Treat each customer on their own merit. Don't punish all customers for the actions of the few. Instead of assuming that all customers are stealing from you, look at each customer as your neighbor or friend and talk to him or her in such a way that is both welcoming and trusting.
Here are a few other obvious sentiments from the article. "The best customer is the return customer, Every Business Should Have Clean Restrooms and what one would assume is obvious, remain open during the hours on your sign." This is a very brief summary of the entire article. Make sure you head over and check out the article in it's entirety. Bottom line, treat your customers the best you can. After all, they are the reason you are in business.

red lobster logoIf you are still with me, (I know this is a long post) I do have one final illustration and then I want to hear from you. The other night I was at Red Lobster for some mediocre seafood enjoyment. Normally, they have outstanding customer service but for some reason our server was either having a bad night or really didn't care. We were seated right away but shortly afterwards our server brought us the wrong drinks. I informed her of the mistake and she took it away never to return with a replacement.

She served us appetizers, salads and the main course, the whole time forgetting to bring me Red Lobster Biscuitsanything to drink. But here's where you say, "didn't you reminder her?" Yes, of course I did. As a matter of fact, I reminded her 2 additional times that I didn't have anything to drink. In the end, I ate my entire meal with nothing to drink. I had to grab my wifes water a couple of times to wash down the cheesy garlic and herb biscuits, you know the ones I am talking about! Mmmmmmmm. Anyway, here's the question. Do you tip or not?

Tipping is a big debate with some of my friends. Maybe this is the bigger question that I need answered. Is tipping based on the level of service you receive or is it just part of the cost of going out. Do you think that people should get tipped even if they provide horrible service? I have been on both the tipper and the "tippee" and my thoughts are much different than some of my friends. Let me know what you think.

Happy Holidays From Big Pappa

This was reproduced with permission and written by Mark Sierra from Me And My Drum.

Twas My Blog Before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the ’sphere
Me and some bloggers were spreading good cheer.
All the ads were hung in my sidebar with care
In hope that my readers would soon click some there.

I wrote a few posts and scheduled ahead,
Awaited my traffic, while I was in bed.
Next morning I woke to find my stats low.
“What happened?” I cried, “Why didn’t they show?”

When I asked Adsense Tracker for her to help me
She said “Stumble Trolls are the answer, you see?”
So I stumbled and stumbled, then stumbled some more
I searched for one hundred, but only found four.

Scary they were, all angry and wrinkled
Some consumed donuts (some of them sprinkled).
“Can you bring me my traffic, and make it real high?”
I awaited their answer, while swatting a fly.

“Get lost, little blogger, we serve only ourselves.
If it’s help that you want, find some blog elves!”
“Blog Elves” I repeated. Do they really exist?
So I sailed to Kyle’s Cove, to see what I missed.

“No Blog Elves are here,” Kyle said with a grin.
“What you need my good man is a WordPress plugin.”
I scratched my head thinking who else I should ask,
I began to fret over this challenging task.

My adventure it took me to a friend I call “K”
So I stopped at his home page to see what he’d say.
“Glad you asked me, good buddy, I have lots I can mention,
But what you need now is a browser extension.”

I said, “Thank you, friend K, but I have far too many.”
So I sailed and I paid the toll man his penny.
Penny! That’s it! The answer is money!
So I went to the man whose wife calls him “honey”.

Security was tight and the line was quite long.
To close on my goal, I had to stay strong.
When I finally approached his shiny gold throne,
I felt very small, I felt so alone.

“Excuse me, kind sir”, my voice it was squeaky,
“Can you help my young blog?”, I said rather meekly.
The man, he walked toward me, I quickly grew wary.
When he stopped just before me, his name tag read “Garry“.

“Dude, what you need is my frequent reminder.
It’s a very cool tool called Micro Niche Finder.”
And laying a finger aside of his nose,
His jet-pack flared on, up the chimney he rose.

I peered out the window as he floated and flew.
“You need awesome content and Google AdSense, too!”
So I went back to blogging, and wrote this here post,
Not knowing to Google if I would play host.

Would search engines find me? Would people stay here?
Would the Feedburner chicklet go into high gear?
Blogging Gal Tish and some ThingsbyMike
Had blogs that they love, but mine would they like?

Then finally it happened. There arose such a clatter,
I ran to my blog, to see what was the matter.
G’Analytics showed numbers aglow.
I was thrilled and ecstatic. Oh what a show!

Readers left comments, told friends far and wide.
Even Bush stopped to say, “That is quite a tide
Of traffic you have here, my gosh that’s so cool!”
I love it when I have caused others to drool.

But I know that to keep it involves lots of work.
Keep writing good posts and not be a jerk.
So as this year closes, I say to the ’sphere,
Thanks for your comments and coming back here!

The man on his jet-pack, I could hear flying by,
And as he drew near heard him utter this cry:
“Now Caveman, now Allyn, now Jason, and Beth,
On Tyler, on Joe on Ryan and now Blake!”

These are the bloggers who I travel with most.
And to each I assign this “Twas” Christmas post.
Just copy and paste, and tweak as you like,
Remember to link to others you like.

What You Can Do With Cats.

ipods on a cat

In my daily blogosphere rounds, I ran across this site. StuffOnMyCat.com

I am not a big fan of cats but I have met a couple that have had a pretty good personality. This site however takes making fun of your cat to the next level, as if there was a next level.

So here's what you do evidently. You put stuff on your cat and you take pictures of it.

I have been laughing at this for about an hour now and just as I wrote that last line I burst into laugher again.

I know, I know this is a little off topic but this concept is really making me laugh. I picked the above picture to remind you of the contest that you can still enter.

Happy Wednesday!

" What I Found In My Email" Mondays. Vol.1 - Issue 10

In the interest in keeping with tradition and the fact that these seem to be the most read posts from stumblers, here is the latest edition of, "What I found in my email" Mondays.

I received this today from my Dad. The email was entitled, "Engineering Question.
The question was posed about how much a house weighs. The answer; evidently more than a rural, 2 lane bridge can hold. Here are the pictures.

house breaks the bridge

house breaks the bridge

house breaks the bridge

It's my guess that someone is going to owe someone else a new house. I wonder if they dishes are OK?

Well, that's it for this Monday. OH, and make sure you enter the contest for the iPod. The post says we are celebrating 15,000 unique visitors for the month, but so far we have surpassed 20,000 as of today and it's all because of you.

With the sincerest heart, I would like to thank all of you for stopping by The Big Bald Blog. Merry Christmas to you and yours and may this holiday season be filled with warmth and laughter, the things memories are made with.

With warmest regards,

Andy

You're Never To Old To Learn Something New

Yesterday I got tagged for a meme. OK, first of all I don't know what a meme is or even how to pronounce it. Is it "meeem" or "me me" or is it "mem". I don't know. So I set out on a quest to find out exactly what this is.

According to Wikopedia, it is "as defined within memetic theory, constitutes a theoretical unit of cultural information, the building block of cultural evolution or diffusion that propagates from one mind to another analogously to the way in which a gene propagates from one organism to another as a unit of genetic information and of biological evolution.[1] Multiple memes may propagate as cooperative groups called memeplexes (meme complexes)."

If only you could see the blank look on my face.

After many more hours of exhaustive research, I can now tell you that meme rhymes with dream. YES! We're making some progress here. Moving on I find that, basically, a meme is an idea that spread from person to person, grows and multiplies until it has influence a multitude or even an entire generation. Memes are very reminiscent of viral marketing.

However in the case of me getting tagged to participate in a meme, it's more like an old fashioned chain letter. Bloggers that get tagged by someone to participate in a meme meaning that they are expected to keep in motion the initial set of instructions that the creator of the meme put forth.

Now I may have this COMPLETELY wrong and if I do, someone please set me straight.

So this is me fulfilling my obligation to my good friend Sam Freedom who was kind enough to give me some love in the foundation of this meme.

So Here They Are, The Simple Entrecard Meme Instructions

  1. Read these instructions twice;
  2. Drop your EntreCard at this site;
  3. Drop your EntreCard at the 5 EntreCard users' sites listed below;
  4. Choose 5 other EntreCard users;
  5. Copy these instructions to your own Entrecard meme article and tag (link) those 5 people;
  6. Include a link to the Entrecard meme article of the person who tagged you;
  7. Link to the original article "Sam Freedom's Drop Squad - the First Entrecard Meme Known to Bloggers";
  8. Notify the people you choose that they've been tagged;
  9. Comment below so even passers-by can drop their card at your site, too (it shows you are active and will likely return the favor)
  10. (optional) IF you tag your blogs, use both "entrecard" and "entrecard meme" as tags so that others can find them AND so that we can find them all later as this grows. (If you don't know what tagging is, don't worry.)
The original 5 in the first one that I got tagged with were:

The Evil Woobie
CyberStreetReport
(Myself) The Big Bald Blog
Affiliate Confession
Flaming Lacer

So I guess this is where I am supposed to tag 5 others. Here you go guys, it's off my plate now.

Gorilla Sushi (Even though I thoroughly read his meme policy)
Life and Lawns (Sorry Allyn)
Sly Bald Guys (Some love for ya Tyler)
Caveman Conclusion (Dude, seriously be nice to me)
Joan Joyce (You got this cuz you send me tons of traffic)

Ok am I done now?

Entrecard Revisited

This is kind of cool. I made it to the second row in the "Most Popular" category on Entrecard.
That's me at the very end of row 2. I don't know what this means but being in the top 12 seems pretty great. It looks like I only have about 9 more more points to make up in order to pass up our good buddy John Cow (who I think is really John Chow).

For those of you who are a little confused about my Entrecard design for The Big Bald Blog, let me explain. I also have another site that I mess around with called Big Pappa World Wide. It too is an experiment in fun. Just in case you were wondering, there you have it.

As a matter of follow up on Entrecard. It is still working great by delivering traffic, comments and quality people. Another completely random side note, my card is the only circle style card on Entrecard. How is that important you ask. It's not.

Also, I haven't been very good about this but here goes my pitch. Make sure you subscribe to The Big Bald Blog either with the RSS or sign up and have posts delivered to you by email.

Thanks again for stopping by.

UPDATE:

A few hours after writing this I went back in and this is what I saw. Now, I am 100% positive this fluke will change rather rapidly but at least I will always have this post to remember the day.

What I Found In My Email" Mondays. Vol.1 - Issue 9

And here we are! Another edition of "What I found In my email" Mondays.

In this episode we find our hero courageously defending his in-box against the evil villain, Spamious Maximus... OK fine here's the pictures.

Here is what I found in an email entitled, "Priceless Pictures."

Pay attention kids. This is why spelling in school is important when it's time to get a job.

Flame broiled? No, that's Burger King.

And the road isn't even icy or wet.

I know gas is expensive but this is just plain ridiculous. You mean to tell me that this person didn't know they ripped the hose from the pump.

Must have been a long stakeout.

I don't think that I can hold it that long.

Someone is in trouble.

Awwwwww, poor kitty.

I saved the cutest for last!

Have a great week everyone!

Weekend Posting.

As I was sitting here on this cold Sunday afternoon reading some blogs, I see that a lot of people post on the weekends. Normally I will post Monday through Friday and occasionally on Saturday. A fella does need some time off ,you know. So how many of you post at least 6 days per week? What about 7?

Just curious as to whether or not I should ramp up for weekend posting.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Business Cards

Well, someone did it to me again. They gave me a perforated, print it yourself, designed on Microsoft word, ink jetted business card. Oh man I really can't stand that. I'm sorry, but this is one of my pet peeves. For a business owner to care that little about that initial impression, I find that sad.

If you are going out and asking people to buy from you, shouldn't it be OK to hand them a nice business card? Seriously even if your business card cost an expensive $.20 cents each, or $200.00 per 1000, isn't it worth it if you are asking someone to spend 3 or 4 thousand with you. There are all kinds of places out there that will let you can get really nice card for about $125.00 per 1000.

I keep collecting these home ink jetted cards as a matter of curiosity. To date, I have 2 of this type from attorneys, 1 from a travel agent and 1 from a professional organizer. All professionals who normally charge handsomely for their services.

As I was writing this, I went digging through my business card stash and found a couple that really stood out.

The scanner didn't do them justice. The first one pictured is a card that I received from a plastics company, and YES the card is on translucent plastic. Clean, simple yet creative. It just makes sense right?

The second one is a deputy sheriff's card. It embossed, gold and black foil stamped. I kind of had mixed emotions on this when I found out that the card cost $.50 cents each. But then I guess I would be hypocritical if I said that tax payer dollars shouldn't be spending that much on business cards for officers. My point is, they are 2 out of the ordinary cards that made me pay a little bit closer attention.

Out of all the business cards I had in my file, these were the only 2 that seemed to be a little more "special." In the interest in making my point, I set out on the Internet to see what kind of business card designs were out there. The creative I found, made my 2 examples look like photo copies on card stock. I ran across a site called Creative Bits that had all kinds of great concepts and design work in the form of business cards. The images below are just a few examples that are shown on the site.

Excellent use of a debossing die.

This happens to be one of the coolest cards I have seen. Someone emailed this to me several months ago. I would imagine that this is a pretty expensive card to make and the laser cutting or die stamping shop would require quite the run to tool up for it. I don't know too many locksmiths that would spring for this, but someone obviously did.

How about a scratch off business card. Very nice.

This one is pretty funny. I am not sure if this was a real card or if this was just a mock-up. Clever nonetheless.

This is probably the THE coolest business card I have seen. Slightly beating out the locksmith card. The concept is amazing. You have to stretch the card, as if you were working out, to see the full information.

Another great concept. Print your information on the little envelopes and put some grass seed in it. How appropriate for a lawn care company. (I put this one up there for you Allyn.)

Make sure you stop by Creative Bits and check out the other creative ways to get your information across in a business card format.

Because I love my readers so much, here's I am going to do to. If you have a great concept on a business card or your card is a bit out of the ordinary, send it to me and I will post what I receive on Fridays. Send your cards to TheBigBaldBlog AT impactmt dot com. What should we call that feature? "Show me your cards?"

Thanks again for stopping by and have a great weekend everyone!

Because Everyone Is Talking About It Anyway

Just about every blog that I read lately is talking about Entrecard. OK FINE.

Yes I signed up, yes I am getting a bunch of traffic from it, yes I have met some really cool people because of it and yes it is worth your time and energy.

Since everyone else is doing it and my draft menu is getting a little low, I too am going to write a glowing review about Entrecard!

Here is what you do. You sign up and upload the image you want for your business card. Once that is done, you have to put the Entrecard widget on your site. From there, any site you visit with the Entrecard widget, you will be able to drop your card. This results in your card showing up in the widget owner's control panel.

There are 2 ways get traffic from Entrecard. Once when other EC users click on your card in their dashboard and two, when people click on the 125 x 125 ad on a site that you are advertising on.

There is a cost for advertising on someone else's site. However you pay with your Entrecard Credits. These credits are earned when someone advertises on your site OR when you drop a card on someone else's widget.

Not that it's any real big deal, well actually it kind of is for me since I am a big fan, but guess who is wants to advertise on The Big Bald Blog? John Chow! Here is a screen shot of his card in my pending file, and yes I approved it.

Bottom line? This is the single most effective (and fun) thing I have participated in that brings traffic in. Some have even started blog contests that are offering Entrecard Credits to the winners.

I have nabbed the RSS feeds from blogs like Sly Bald Guys, Gorilla Sushi, Caveman Conclusion, Marketing Deviant, CK Marketing, Cigar Jack and many others because of it. If you have a blog, head on over and check it out. It's definitely worth doing!

On a side note, I am still seeing BlogRush widgets all over the place, is anyone getting any traffic from that? I know I'm not.

Weird Question

Here's a weird question that was posed to me this morning. Why aren't there any redheaded news anchors or reporters on TV?

Frankly I had never thought about that. That is weird!

How Fast Do You Type.

I was thinking about something last night. Regardless of why you blog or what you blog about, one irrefutable thing that all bloggers have in common is that they all type on a keyboard. Actually now that I think about it, some of you may use voice recognition software but I would surmise that percentage is pretty low.

Anyway, I am curious how fast you type. Myself, I am in the 45 to 50 wpm category. Not as fast as most but definitely better than your average, run-of-the-mill hunt and pecker.

Here's an online typing test that you can take. It measures accuracy and WPM. Let me know where are you at?

Want To Win $1800 Worth Of Stuff?

I just ran across the Thor Schrock’s Secret Classroom Blog Contest. He is giving away some great prizes! First place, are you ready for this, is $1000 via PayPal. Second place is A Copy of Joel Comm’s Secret Classroom DVD Set and third place is a22″ Wide screen Acer LCD Computer Display.

After reviewing the Secret Classroom program, it is apparent that this is the one that I hope I get. Don't get me wrong 1 and 3 are great prizes but with The Secret Classroom, you can do much more in the way of building your business. Actually I am surprised that it is not #1. However if you are going to enter make sure you do it by December 31st.

Good luck everyone!
